East Dunbartonshire is set to benefit from a £46.77 million City Deal investment as part of the Council’s City Deal Place and Growth Programme.

The programme is intended to support the local economy and links to the wider City Region via the below projects:

The A803 Corridor Improvements Project has been deferred from the City Deal Programme, although the Council is committed to developing the project further through other potential funding streams, to be identified.

In September 2024 the Council approved the submission of the Place and Growth Programme Outline Business Case (OBC) to the Glasgow City Region (GCR) Cabinet. Subsequently the OBC was approved by GCR Cabinet in November 2024.

Approval allowed the Council to proceed with the next stages of design for both the WDR and Bishopbriggs town centre Civic Space plans.

The Executive Summary of the OBC can be found in the Documents section of this webpage.

Full Business Cases for the Westerhill Development Road (WDR) and a new Civic Space in Bishopbriggs were approved at a meeting of the Council on Thursday 18 December 2025 and then submitted to the GCR Cabinet for approval.

Full Business Cases for the WDR and Civic Space were approved at a meeting of the GCR Chief Executives' Group on 12 February 2026.

That released the necessary funding, with contractors being appointed to deliver the ambitious projects.

Subject to all necessary approvals and consents, the WDR – previously referred to as Phase 5 of the Bishopbriggs Relief Road – is due to be completed by the end of 2027, with the Civic Space expected to be open in late 2026/early 2027.

The programme includes £31.96 million from the UK and Scottish Governments through the Glasgow City Region City Deal.

You can view the report presented to the meeting of the Council by visiting the Committee Diary.
