Armed forces day flagAfter a year that saw Armed Forces personnel across the UK support local government and the NHS to deliver crucial parts of the pandemic response, it is particularly poignant that we honour their service on Armed Forces Day 2021.

As is now an annual tradition, East Dunbartonshire Council's Provost Alan Brown will lead tributes this Armed Forces Day (Saturday 26 June 2021) and show support by flying a special Union Flag outside Council HQ in Kirkintilloch.

The Armed Forces flag will fly, along with many others across the UK, as a symbol of support for serving troops and their families as well as veterans and cadets.

Provost Alan Brown said, “Over the last year we have seen the Armed Forces mobilise across the country, including in East Dunbartonshire, to work with our colleagues in the NHS and our Council teams to deliver a super-human response to the global pandemic. With efficiency and skill they have constructed and assisted with the running of covid test centres, driven ambulances and helped wherever they were needed. We owe them all a huge debt of gratitude and it is right that on Armed Forces Day we thank them and publicly acknowledge their efforts."

Armed Forces Day has become an important day in the national calendar and one which we are proud to commemorate in East Dunbartonshire by raising the flag. This shows our support for our Armed Forces - not only those who are currently serving but those veterans to whom we owe so much and our young cadets who are our future.

Provost Brown continued, "It is my honour and privilege to raise the Armed Forces Flag again this year and to let our troops know that they are appreciated, respected and that we are grateful for their service - past and present."

In 2017, the Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant with the Ministry of Defence, a promise that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families are treated fairly.
