Twechar Masterplan Study

East Dunbartonshire Council, with its partners, commissioned the preparation of a regeneration masterplan for Twechar. The aim of the masterplan was to develop a joined up approach ensuring that the physical, social and economic issues were considered in relation to each other.

A multi-agency steering group was established to oversee the study. The group included Communities Scotland, Greater Glasgow Health Board, Scottish Enterprise Dunbartonshire, British Waterways and a community representative.

The masterplan states that Twechar is encountering a declining population and deprivation and needs substantial investment injected into the area. A modest growth in population through new housing development and the clearance of the unpopular part of the coal board scheme would transform the nature and image of the village in a sustainable manner, sustain local services, create job and training opportunities and attract new investment. A number of projects have been identified and are being taken forward by the steering group.
