Household waste and recycling centres (tips/dumps)

BOOKING SYSTEM NOW IN OPERATION

The Mavis Valley Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) is now operating on an appointment only basis for cars and vans. If you visit the HWRC without an appointment you will not be able to enter.

On this page you will find information on:

Before you go

Our booking system is now available to make appointments. Booking slots will be available up to 14 days in advance and up until 15 minutes prior to arrival.

To book an appointment online you will be asked to select the type of vehicle you will be arriving in. You will then be prompted to provide:

  • your name, address and postcode
  • your email address
  • your vehicle registration number
  • a contact phone number

It is important to enter the registration of the vehicle you will be bringing to the site. If you bring a different vehicle you will be turned away. Registration amendments cannot be made so please ensure you book using the vehicle you wish to visit.

If you need to make a booking using a hire vehicle but do not know the vehicle registration, please enter H1RED. Please bring your hire documentation with you when you visit the site. We will send a confirmation of your booking to the email address you provide. It may take a while to arrive and may go to your junk or spam folder in the first instance. If you have not received a confirmation email within 24 hours, call Customer Services on 0300 1234510.

Please consider if you can store your waste safely at home until you have a car full to reduce unnecessary journeys.

The site is for East Dunbartonshire residents and you will be asked for proof of address and photographic identification when you visit. Commercial waste is not accepted.

Cancelling or amending your booking

We expect a high demand for appointments. If you are no longer able to attend your booking please cancel the appointment so it can be used by another resident.

This can be done using the link included at the bottom of your confirmation email.

At the site

When you arrive for your appointment you must follow our site rules:

  • Each vehicle will be allocated a total time of 15 minutes. Arrive promptly for your slot. If you arrive too early, you must wait for your slot. If you arrive late, you cannot enter.
  • We check the vehicle registration and only booked vehicles are permitted.
  • Site management measures are in place, please follow all signage and instructions.
  • Remain in your vehicle until staff instruct you to unload your waste.
  • A maximum of two people are allowed out of the vehicle to unload items.
  • Staff cannot help you unload – only bring what you can carry.
  • Respect staff on site and follow their instructions – they are there to help.

Staff will ask what items you have and advise you to wait for an area to become free. They will then ask you to drive to an area where you can deposit your items.

FAQ's

Why is a booking system being used?

A booking system will allow the Council to limit the number of people on the site at any one time, which will ensure that at peak times we do not get long queues of traffic which can lead to frustration and road safety issues.

How do I book an appointment?

You can book an appointment online [opens in a new window] at any time or by calling Customer Services, Mon – Fri, 9am - 5pm, on 0300 1234510

How much does it cost to book an appointment?

There is no cost to book an appointment to dispose of your unwanted household items at the site.

What if I arrive early or late for my booking slot?

Please arrive no more than 10 minutes early, to avoid queueing. If you arrive early and the site has capacity, you will likely be permitted to enter.

Do not worry if you arrive on time but are delayed in entering the site by vehicles in front, you will still be allowed to dispose of your waste.

How do I change or cancel my appointment?

If you have provided us with an email address you will receive an email confirming your booking. There is a link on this email that will allow you to cancel or reschedule your appointment. If you no longer have this email you can call 03001234510 Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and a member of our Customer team will do this for you.

I have made a booking but haven’t received a confirmation email what should I do?

Due to a high volume of bookings being made in the system, confirmation emails may not come through immediately.

Please check your spam / junk account as the email may be directed into there the first time you make a booking via the new system.

If you have not received a confirmation email within 24 hours, call Customer Services on 0300 1234510. The confirmation email will come from edcwaste and will be titled Confirmation of Booking for Mavis Valley HWRC with the date and time of your booking.

What if I arrive without a booking?

Please do not arrive without a booking. If you arrive without a booking you will be turned away due to the capacity of our sites.

Will I still have to queue?

At times you may have to wait for a few minutes but the booking system is designed to minimise this. Your patience is greatly appreciated.

How long do I have to dispose of my unwanted goods during my appointment?

You will have 15 minutes in the site. This is to provide as many slots as possible and considered enough time to recycle a carload of materials. Longer slots would reduce the number available daily.

Can I book two back to back slots?

No, the allocated time should provide you with plenty of time to dispose of your unwanted items.

Can I attend more than once a day?

Yes, but there is a maximum of three visits per day permitted. Each visit requires one booking slot on the system. You can only book three visits in twenty four hours, you must wait twenty four hours after three visits to book another.

How many people can I bring with me to help?

A maximum of two people from the same household will be permitted on site, to assist with and to speed up the process of unloading.

The Council do not accept tyres at the recycling centre. If you need new tyres on your car, the garage fitting them will normally dispose of your old ones for you. If you change your tyres at home, tyre companies may charge a small fee to recycle them so it's good to always check first..

The types of vehicles and trailers shown below will only be allowed to dispose of waste during the allocated times at the household waste and recycling centre at Mavis Valley, Balmuildy Road, Bishopbriggs
