boatyardNonagenarian, Dick Stevenson, was the first local artist to exhibit his work at the Auld Kirk Museum in Kirkintilloch over 50 years ago and this summer he will be returning for his final exhibition with his talented daughter, Jackie Stevenson. Their exhibition, entitled ‘Town and Country’ will be running from Saturday 27 May until Tuesday 27 July.

Both father and daughter were raised in Kirkintilloch and were taught locally at Lenzie Academy. Jackie continued following in her father’s footsteps after school, when she developed her artistic talents at the Glasgow School of Art. Jackie now resides in Ardentinny after living in England for many years where she ran small galleries as well as painting and exhibiting locally and nationally. She was elected member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 2019.

Jackie’s paintings in this joint exhibit contributes to the ‘country’ aspect with her landscapes of the stunning scenery of the West of Scotland. Jackie creates these pieces through the use of watercolours layered with acrylic, ink, collages, pencil and pastels to create a sense of place.

Dick’s well-known watercolours portray the town and local countryside beautifully. Over the years he has often been commissioned to create these memorable pieces of specific places and houses both abroad and when travelling the Fife coast.

Painting of a frosty landscapeJim Neill, Chair of East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust, which operates the Auld Kirk Museum said “ It is an honour for the Auld Kirk Museum to be hosting Dick and Jackie Stevenson’s ‘Town and Country’ exhibition, in what is to be Dick’s final exhibition. It is particularly poignant as Dick was the first local artist to ever showcase his work at this venue. Throughout his long career, Dick has been a well-known and much-loved member of the local community - he taught art in local schools, including Lenzie Academy where he himself was once a pupil and he curated many exhibitions in the gallery he opened in Kirkintilloch.”

Jim Neill, continued, “This is a rare opportunity to appreciate the home-grown talent of father and daughter Dick and Jackie Stevenson, so I would urge everyone to come to the Auld Kirk Museum over the coming weeks/ months to see this exhibition.”
