Balmuildy Primary School is being replaced with a brand new school that will now include an Early Years Centre.

Work is set to being in August 2025 and it is forecast that the new school will open in spring 2027 with the old building being demolished shortly afterwards.

This page will keep you up to date with the progress of the project.

Update July 2025

Enabling works will be carried out in and around the school site from Monday 14 July for about four weeks, finished before the school reopens mid-August. The enabling works include:

  • The diversion of telecoms infrastructure within the school site
  • Formation of a new construction access off Stirling Drive, outside the school site
  • Construction of new drainage connections to the south west of the site on Stirling Drive
  • Erection of temporary heras fencing to support the formation of the new access and tarmac repairs.

Project Background (February 2022 – June 2025)

In February 2022 the Council agreed to build a new Balmuildy Primary School and Early Years Centre in Bishopbriggs. However, due to the affordability of the project, in August 2024, the recommendation was to pause the project and cease all related project activities.

At the special meeting of the Council on Thursday 6 March 2025, the Council instructed officers to re-establish the project team to deliver a new Balmuildy Primary School and Early Years facility as part of its 10 Year Capital Investment Plan.

On Thursday 19 June 2025, the Council gave approval to Officers to enter into a construction contract and ancillary agreements for the development of the project.

Project Aims

The aims of this project are:

  • To create a modern primary school to replace the existing Balmuildy Primary School, based on a pupil roll of 462 (to match existing)
  • To create an additional Early Years Centre within the new building for 60 pupils
  • To construct a new tandem build school
  • To demolish the existing school
  • To minimise the carbon impact of the development across the full project lifecycle.

Consultation & Community Engagement

Due to the size of the site area at Balmuildy, the Planning Application was considered a Major Planning Application, meaning additional public consultation was required in advance of the application submission.

Two public events were held; the first of these took place on 24 May 2023 and the second on 21 June 2023. The sessions were held in support of the planning application, providing an overview of the design intention for the project. Comments from attendees were considered by the design team prior to the submission of the planning application.

Planning Application

The planning application was submitted and approved by the Planning Board on 28 March 2024.
