Regional Spatial Strategies (RSS) were introduced by the Planning (Scotland) Act and will replace Strategic Development Plans, which have now been abolished.

The preparation of the RSS will be led by Clydeplan, which is the operating name for the Glasgow and Clyde Valley Strategic Development Planning Authority Joint Committee and comprises the eight local authorities of East Dunbartonshire, East Renfrewshire, Glasgow City, Inverclyde, North Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire, South Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire Councils.

Work on preparing the RSS will begin once statutory guidance is in place. RSSs will enable planning authorities to work together with others to guide. Once complete, it will provide a place-based strategy that guides future long-term strategic development and use of land in the long-term public interest. Key aspects include the identification of networks of regionally significant centres and ensuring the spatial strategy identifies and responds to nationally and regionally recognised natural and historic areas and assets.

Further information on Clydeplan and the RSS process can be found on the Clydeplan website.
