Primary school registration

Registration for Children due to start Primary 1

EDUCATION (Scotland) Act 1980

It is customary for children to attend their local primary school.

If you wish to enrol your child for the start of a new session in August, they must have attained the age of 5 years between 1 March the same year and last day of February the following year.

Parents/carers of those children due to commence attendance at school in August should register their child for primary education during the January registration week which is week beginning 14 January 2019.  Individual schools should be contacted  for an appointment.

How do I register my child for primary school at the start of school?

Entry to primary schools in East Dunbartonshire is on a once-a-year basis, at the start of the session in August.

Know your catchment school  - Find My Nearest

You can visit your local catchment area primary school during the January registration week.  If you wish to register your child after the January registration week, individual schools should be contacted for an appointment.

Bring your child's birth certificate, Child Benefit details/Tax Credit Award Notice (TCAN), your current Council Tax notice and a recent utility bill.  If you are registering at a denominational school and your child has been baptised, you must also take their baptismal certificate.

In cases where children are residing with relatives, legal confirmation of guardianship will also be required.

Parents can make an Early Entry application for a child whose fifth birthday falls after the above period, only if resident in East Dunbartonshire.

Gaelic Medium Education

Gaelic Medium Education (GME) is an option within Scottish schools that gives children and young people the opportunity to become proficient in Gaelic as well as English. GME is a free bilingual education option available within East Dunbartonshire Council at Meadowburn Primary School.

What if I want to send my child to a school outside my local catchment area? (Placing Request)

You have the right to make a placing request for your child to attend a school other than their catchment area school. Information on placing requests can be found in School placing requests.

Moving to a new school in East Dunbartonshire

If you are moving into East Dunbartonshire, or moving from one area in East Dunbartonshire to another, you will need to register your child at his/her new catchment area school.

You will be required to provide proof of residency to the catchment school in the form of, Council Tax notice, recent utility bill, child benefit/Tax Credit Award Notice (TCAN)/bank statement.   You will also be required to show a copy of the child's birth certificate, if registering for a denomination school you may be asked to provide baptismal certificate.   In cases where children are residing with relatives, legal confirmation of guardianship will also be required. Further details can be obtained from the school.

On very rare occasions, there may not be a space immediately in your catchment area school. If this happens, we will provide transport to a nearby school until a space becomes available in the catchment area school. We would recommend that you contact the school prior to moving, to see if this is likely to be an issue.

Please note that the school cannot register your child until you have officially moved to your new address and you have shown the school the appropriate documents.
