Health and Safety Regulations and Inspection

The Council is responsible for enforcing occupational health and safety legislation in around 1,000 premises in East Dunbartonshire.  This includes commercial premises such as offices, shops, hotels, restaurants and public houses, in addition to workplaces such as tyre and exhaust fitting premises, hairdressers, places of worship and sport and leisure centres.

It carries out its enforcement duties by:

  • Implementing a risk based planned programme of inspections ie premises assessed as being a higher risk are inspected more frequently.
  • Investigating complaints from employees or members of the public.
  • Investigating accidents or dangerous occurrences which employers are required to report.
  • Providing advice on health and safety at work issues to employers, employees and members of the public.
  • Publishing annual performance indicator reports.
  • Working in partnership with the Health and Safety Executive, other local authorities and relevant organisations to encourage health and safety in the workplace.
  • Having a complaints procedure for those who feel dissatisfied with the service provided.
  • Producing an Enforcement Policy which is freely available on request.
  • Having a Service Plan which is produced annually and details the Group's priorities, aims and objectives for the enforcement of health and safety. This document is also freely available on request.
