Garden waste collections take a winter break

Date:
Wednesday, 10 November, 2021

Green binResidents are being reminded that their green bins will be emptied for the last time this month ahead of a winter break.

Collections of garden waste will cease in November for a period of three months before resuming in March 2022. Residents are urged to check their waste and recycling calendar for their last collection date, which will fall between November 13 and 27 and coincides with the release of seasonal staff utilised for the provision of this service.

Joint Council leader Vaughan Moody, said, "During the winter months the demand for garden waste collections is much reduced, as people are less active in the garden and there is little plant growth.

"However, any garden waste can still be taken to Mavis Valley Recycling Centre in Bishopbriggs by appointment. During winter months, the centre is open between 8am and 5pm during the week and between 9am and 4.30pm at weekends and appointments can be made online or by calling Customer Services. Alternatively, green-fingered residents could try their hand at home composting.”

Joint Council leader Andrew Polson, added, "While the doorstep garden waste collections will shortly be suspended until Spring, there will be a one-off collection of garden waste bins, including Christmas trees, in January, which we will advertise on our website and social media nearer the time.

"Your new 2022 Garden Waste calendar will be available to view on the Council website early in the New Year."

The material collected in garden waste bins makes a large contribution to the Council’s recycling rate, with 8000 tonnes of garden waste being collected from the kerbside in 2019 (the 2020 figure is not representative, due to the impact of COVID-19).
