Wednesday 9 September is 999 Emergency Services Day and Provost Gillian Renwick is paying tribute to East Dunbartonshire’s emergency services personnel and thanking them on behalf of the community for their dedicated service.
This National Day of Tribute, first launched in 2018, fittingly begins at 9am on 9 September to represent the 9th hour of the 9th day of the 9th month and is an opportunity to celebrate the country’s emergency services personnel and remember those killed in the line of duty.
As in previous years, Provost Gillian Renwick met with local representatives of Police Scotland, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and the Scottish Ambulance Service to thank them on behalf of the people of East Dunbartonshire. They joined her in raising a special Emergency Services Day flag which is flying at East Dunbartonshire Council Headquarters in Kirkintilloch.
Provost Renwick said, “I think it’s very important as a community we recognise this National Day of Tribute; it’s an opportunity to remind ourselves just how indebted we are to our emergency services. Very recently we were all shocked and saddened to hear of the deaths of two serving police officers killed in the line of duty in Middlesborough; a stark reminder of the dangers faced by emergency services personnel every single day. We never know the day or hour we will rely on a paramedic, the Fire and Rescue Service or the Police to save our lives or the lives of those we love, and that in protecting us, they are often putting themselves at risk.
“It was an honour to meet some of our local heroes in person and to thank them for their commitment to the work they all do daily to protect people living and working in East Dunbartonshire. We will proudly fly the 999 Emergency Services Day flag throughout the National Day of Tribute in recognition of the vital contribution the emergency services make to our communities in East Dunbartonshire.”
