Transformative improvement works are poised to start to improve the safety and aesthetic appeal of Lennoxtown Main Street in East Dunbartonshire.
Council Officers successfully applied to Transport Scotland’s Active Travel Infrastructure Fund and received an award of £1.02m towards the project.
The Lennoxtown Main Street transformation will focus on the area from Crosshill Street to School Lane and will deliver traffic calming measures, a controlled crossing, material upgrades and landscaping enhancements to improve the safety and aesthetic appeal of the street.
Work will also include landscaping improvements to the gardens of the Campsie Memorial Hall, to complement the refurbishment of the building, along with resurfacing of the adjacent Lennox Square car park.
Councillor Paul Ferretti, convener of the Place, Neighbourhood and Corporate Asserts committee, welcomed the milestone. He said, “I am absolutely delighted to see work starting on this much-anticipated project. The improvements will breathe new life into the village’s main thoroughfare and ensure a safer and more attractive street for residents and visitors alike.
“These plans have been informed by community consultation and aim to highlight the village’s heritage and natural assets.
Along with the current refurbishment of the much-loved Campsie Hall and the ongoing Greenspace improvement project, this regeneration work marks a significant investment in Lennoxtown at a pivotal time for the area.
East Dunbartonshire Council secured funding from a variety of sources for the regeneration, including from Transport Scotland, supplemented by contributions from the EDC Capital Programme and other funds.
Transport Scotland requires the Council to deliver a project which is in line with Cycling by Design, Designing Streets and Inclusive Design for Town Centres and Busy Streets guidance.
Constructing high-quality Active Travel infrastructure contributes to the four priorities of the National Transport Strategy which are to reduce inequality, take climate action, help deliver inclusive growth and improve health and well-being.
Cabinet Secretary for Transport Fiona Hyslop, said, “I’m pleased to see construction begin on the Lennoxtown Main Street regeneration project, supported by over £1 million from the Scottish Government's Active Travel Infrastructure Fund. This investment will deliver safer, more attractive spaces for walking, wheeling and cycling, while enhancing the character and accessibility of the village centre.
“This project is part of the over £26 million I announced in May for construction-ready active travel schemes, and reflects our commitment to building healthier, more inclusive communities.
“To help local authorities realise their ambitions, the Scottish Government will invest over £188 million in active and sustainable transport in 2025-26. This funding will help people save money, improve health, and protect the climate."
Preparatory works have been underway over the last couple of weeks– led by main contractor Luddon Construction – and the project will now get fully underway in the coming days.
Craig Brodie, Contracts Manager at Luddon Construction, said, “We’re delighted to have been awarded the Lennoxtown Main Street upgrade project and to be working in partnership with East Dunbartonshire Council to deliver these important improvements. This is a fantastic opportunity to enhance the local environment and create a safer, more attractive space for everyone who lives, works, and visits the area.
“At Luddon Construction, we take great pride in delivering high-quality public realm and infrastructure projects across the UK and we look forward to bringing our experience and expertise to ensure the successful delivery of this transformative scheme.”
Works are expected to conclude by Summer 2026. This project sits alongside two other capital regeneration projects being progressed in Lennoxtown by the Council - the Campsie Memorial Hall refurbishment, in partnership with the Campsie Memorial Hall Trust, and the Lennoxtown Greenspace project, both of which are enabled by external funding alongside the Council’s Capital Investment Programme.
