Plans to build new affordable housing in Twechar have taken a major step forward, with construction due to begin this August.

East Dunbartonshire Council will create 15 energy-efficient homes on derelict land next to the Forth and Clyde Canal, at the northern entrance to the village.

The site is one of nine in the Council’s Affordable Housing Investment Programme - involving over 300 new homes - and the first to reach the end of the pre-construction phase.

The site is one of nine in the Council’s Affordable Housing Investment Programme - involving over 300 new homes - and the first to reach the end of the pre-construction phase.

The properties will be built to Passivhaus standards, meaning their design and the construction materials will be tailored to maximise energy efficiency and minimise heat demand once occupied.

The new homes are being created on land next to the Council's recently-completed Twechar Outdoor Pursuits Centre.

Elected members received an update at a meeting of the Council on Thursday 19 June 2025 and gave the go-ahead for contracts to be finalised.

I'm pleased to confirm that work is progressing on the project to create 15 new homes in Twechar - the first part of an ambitious programme of affordable housing which will see over 300 new properties built in East Dunbartonshire.
Councillor Gordan Low, Leader of the Council

He added, "They will all meet Passivhaus standards, maximising energy efficiency and minimising heat demand - cutting carbon emissions whilst also helping to address fuel poverty by reducing fuel bills for our tenants."

The developed design has gone through a full tender exercise via the SCAPE Scotland Construction Framework.

The Twechar project will cost just under £8.8 million, including funding from the Council’s Five Year Housing Capital Investment Plan and the Scottish Government's Affordable Housing Supply Programme.

The wider site, including the outdoors pursuits centre, has also benefited from a grant via the Vacant and Derelict Land Fund - helping to cover remediation costs.

Construction is due to start on the new homes this August, with completion due in September 2026.
