This weekend the nation will come together to mark Armed Forces Day (Saturday 28 June 2025) and once again East Dunbartonshire Council is paying its own tribute.

A special Armed Forces Day flag was raised by Provost Gillian Renwick and Lord-Lieutenant of East Dunbartonshire Jill Young, MBE. The Council’s Veterans’ Champion, Councillor Stewart MacDonald, attended the short ceremony alongside local veteran Robert Campbell MBE, who is a retired Royal Highland Fusilier.

The special Union Flag will fly at the Council’s Kirkintilloch HQ over the weekend in support of the commemorative event.

Provost Renwick said, “Armed Forces Day is an opportunity for the country to come together to show its support for the people who make up the Armed Forces - serving troops and their families, veterans and cadets too. It is right that the Council marks this annual day and proudly flies the flag as a public show of unity and gratitude for their sacrifice and service.

It is my privilege to be part of the nationwide commemoration and to raise the Armed Forces flag to proudly fly at the Council HQ over this special weekend.

Lord-Lieutenant Jill Young added, “We, as a nation, continue to be indebted to those who today risk their lives in many places around the world and to the Veterans whose service we will never forget and always honour.

“I believe that the United Kingdom has the finest Armed Forces in the world – including our Reservists, Cadets and Volunteers – representing the very best that this country stands for. This is the day when the rest of us can show our patriotic support for their outstanding contribution to this country.”

In 2017, the Council signed the Armed Forces Covenant with the Ministry of Defence – a promise that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, are treated fairly.
