Come and help celebrate the end of an era at the final screening of the Spectrum Film Club on Tuesday 16 December at Kilmardinny House, Bearsden.

This award-winning monthly film club - East Dunbartonshire’s inclusive cinema night specifically for those with additional support considerations - has been running for several years but unfortunately in recent times the number of attendees has been decreasing.

The film club was launched in 2022 by a committee of local autistic residents with support from the Local Area Co-ordinators (LACs) of East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP).

The organising committee have tried numerous incentives to try and increase the audience numbers but with varying success.

Libby Cairns, Chair of East Dunbartonshire HSCP Board, said, “The aim of Spectrum Film Club was to make a night at the movies more accessible for those with additional support considerations from East Dunbartonshire and their families, and it was loved by the people who did attend it.

“However, due to the dwindling audience, the film and venue costs and after a long hard few months of deliberation it has been decided that this month’s showing of The Polar Express will be the film club’s last ever showing.

“I’d like to thank the organising committee and Local Area Co-ordinators for all their hard work over the past three years with the film club.

“A special thanks to the club’s spokesperson Ed who has done an amazing job of introducing each film.

“Thanks also to Jamie for his film introductions and to David and Louise Simmons for their tuck shop contributions – and of course to everyone who regularly attended.

“This last screening will be a celebration of the Spectrum Film Club. Please bring along family and friends, and as it’s Christmas feel free to wear anything festive.”

The good news is the LACs are currently in negotiations with Kirky Cinema to host an ASN film screening in 2026 from their venue in the Kirkintilloch Town Hall and hope to have some dates for this soon.

If anyone would like to discuss alternate groups or activities for those with additional support considerations across East Dunbartonshire, then please email the LACs on lacs@eastdunbarton.gov.uk and they will be happy to support you with finding out this information.
