Meet the winner of the Sports Champion category of this year’s Provost’s Awards – Stuart Strawhorn!
Dedicated youth football coach Stuart Strawhorn has netted himself this award thanks to nominations from the many families who value the tireless work he puts into his role.

He is the main coach for the Rob Roy 2010s boys’ team and the Rossvale under 10s girls’ side which keeps him busy seven days a week.
His inspirational story together with the many heartfelt testimonials submitted to them, led Provost Gillian Renwick and Depute Provost Colette McDiarmid to name Stuart as the award recipient.
Emma Teven was one of the people to nominate Stuart. She said, “He has committed so much to youth football in East Dunbartonshire for many years now. He is such a positive influence on so many boys and girls of all ages, continuously encouraging them to work on their fitness, confidence and most importantly their mental health.
“Stuart is involved in all the kits, the sponsorship, the continuous fundraising and sponsorship events, ensuring all kids get transport to training safely, planning seasonal parties and events to bring the teams together in fun.
Stuart is a real community role model and always has time for every single person he meets. This award is thoroughly deserved.
The Provost and Depute Provost met Stuart and some of the young footballers at Kirkintilloch Sports Club to present his with his award and commemorative certificate.
He said, “I love what I do, so to receive this award for doing something I love is amazing and a huge surprise. I’m humbled that so many people took the time to nominate me and I want to thank them for that. I am really lucky to have so many hard-working people around me, helping to keep the teams running and the kids themselves are a great bunch.
“I believe it is so important to give young people opportunities to be part of something and sport is a great way to do that. Football brings families and communities together and it’s been brilliant to see the clubs grow the way they have and to see the children and young people thrive. That’s why I do it. I’m delighted to receive this award and hope that it will be the first of many this season.”
