Cooling Tower Notification

If you control non-domestic premises you must ensure that you notify the local authority of any cooling tower or evaporative condenser (notifiable devices) on the premises. You must notify the local authority of any changes to the notification information within one month of the change, and if the device ceases to be a notifiable device you must notify the local authority in writing as soon as possible.

How do you apply for the licence?

The application form simply requires information such as the address where the equipment is situated, the name of the person in control of the premises and a brief description of each location or the premises where the equipment is located.

An application form can be downloaded from the document section of this page.

How is the application dealt with?

The application is for the purpose of placing information in a register kept by the Council. It would, however, be prudent to check if either Planning consent or a Building Warrant are required for the installation. The information kept in the register is primarily used by inspectors from the relevant enforcing authority to investigate outbreaks (two or more confirmed, related cases) thought likely to have arisen from wet cooling towers or evaporative condensers.

Can anyone object to the application?

As this is simply a registration process, no permission is required.
