Background
Work has been taking place aimed at creating taxi stances (also known as ranks) in East Dunbartonshire over a number of years.
Proposals for taxi stances in Kirkintilloch and Milngavie were approved by the Council's Policy and Resources Committee in November 2024 and the necessary Traffic Regulation Orders are being progressed. Meanwhile, appropriate options for taxi stances within Bearsden are currently being considered.
In Bishopbriggs, work has been taking place to find a suitable location for a taxi stance as part of the wider Glasgow City Region Bishopbriggs Town Centre Regeneration project.
Previously, an informal taxi rank operated from the area between the Morrisons Bishopbriggs store and St Matthew’s Church. However, that has been fenced off by the supermarket following road layout changes.
Positive discussions have taken place between East Dunbartonshire Council and Morrisons regarding town centre redevelopment plans. However, the Council has been informed that a designated, formal taxi rank within the store car park is not an option due to limited space.
As part of the Bishopbriggs Public Realm Plan, design consultants engaged with the East Dunbartonshire Taxi Owners Association and discussed potential options for the siting of a taxi rank - including the new Civic Space, which will be created nearby.
It has not been possible to incorporate a taxi stance within plans for the new Civic Space as it would have had a significant impact in terms of timescale and cost.
Further options have been reviewed by officers in Licensing - together with colleagues in Roads and Planning - which were considered at a meeting of the Policy and Resources Committee in September 2025.
Consultation is taking place - firstly with the taxi trade, to be followed in due course by engagement with members of the public and stakeholders.
