Have Your Say on Rent Setting
All tenants are encouraged to take part in our annual rent setting consultation.
The income from tenants’ rent allows the Council to deliver our Housing Services, upgrade tenants’ homes, for example by making them more energy-efficient or installing new kitchens or bathrooms, plus increasing the number of properties available for our tenants or applicants.
Across Scotland, Council housing rent increases for this year (2026/27) ranged from 3.5% to 9.5%, with an average rent increase of 6.27%. East Dunbartonshire Council tenants had one of the lowest increases at 4%.
Over the last five years our rent rises have remained at or below RPI +0.5%. In most years recently, the figure was significantly under RPI.
The agreement with tenants behind the above formula was to achieve the following:
- An improved Capital Programme
- The Energy Efficiency Standard for Social Housing (EESSH2) targets
- The continuation of a new Council house building/ development programme.
All tenants are being asked to consider the three options listed below for a rent rise for 2027/28. The Council considers the lower-than-normal options to still be appropriate, given the details provided within this article and also the impact many tenants have experienced due to the financial/economic position and the continued aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic. The three options are:
- 5%
- 6%
- 7%.

Rent Setting Survey
The consultation runs from 17 August 2026 until Monday 28 September 2026.
The Council will use the feedback gathered during the consultation to prepare a report for Council to assist Elected Members to make an informed decision on the level of rent increase for Council tenants in the year 2027/28. We will then inform you what your new rent charge will be, giving you at least four weeks’ notice of any change.
