East Dunbartonshire Council believes in equality of opportunity in employment.

The Council is committed to the fundamental principle that all policies and procedures adopted to determine pay and conditions of employment for all of our employees do not discriminate unlawfully and are free from bias and meet our obligations in relation to equal pay under the Equality Act 2010.

In the furtherance in ensure equality, the Council, in compliance with its obligations in terms of the Scottish Joint Council National Agreement for Local Government workers, implemented the nationally agreed Job Evaluation scheme to determine the value of our posts.

Similarly, Teaching posts comply with the terms and conditions of service outlined by the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers (SNCT). The teaching salary scales and spines are set out in the SNCT Salary Tables. With promoted postholders salary placing determined by the SNCT Job Sizing.

These processes ensure that equal work is paid equally irrespective of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race, religion or belief, sex and sexual orientation.

The Council will continue to work in partnership with Trades Unions to ensure that pay and terms and conditions of employment remain fair, sustainable, and equitable.

To this end we will continue to:  

  • Publish employment information
  • Publish pay gap information
  • Gather information on the composition of our workforce with respect to protected characteristics
  • Provide training and guidance on job evaluation and job sizing for those involved in determining the outcome of a roles which has a direct bearing on pay
  • Inform employees of how these practices work and how their own pay is determined
  • Respond to grievances relating to pay timeously, openly and fairly in accordance with the Councils agreed procedure
  • Inform and consult with Trade Unions as appropriate.
