2026 Carriageway & Footway Herbicide Treatment

  • Responsible Officer:

Gillian Telfer – Greenspace & Streetscene Manager

  • Publication:

This Technical Note will be published on the Council’s website following circulation to Members. Its contents may be disclosed or shared outwith the Council.

  • This Technical Note has been written to update Elected Members on the delayed 2026 Carriageway & Footway Herbicide Treatment Programme
  • The treatment of weed growth along the Council’s adopted network of carriageway, footway, and footpaths is programmed for one treatment during the growing season, as approved by Council in March 2025.  The relevant Council reports and business case can be found at Modern Gov - East Dunbartonshire Council and PID Template – review -  frequencies of carriageway and footway herbicide treatment
  • I can confirm that the longstanding external contractor that has historically undertaken the herbicide treatment of the adopted network went into liquidation in Spring 2026, with no prior notice and no consultation
  • The Service attempted to identify an alternative external contractor but given the short notice the Service has not been able to arrange a suitable substitute
  • In order to provide a level of continuity of service, the Roads & Neighbourhood Service has brought the roadside spraying back in-house, to be delivered by the Streetscene Operations Team
  • The Service has identified and purchased the required equipment and is completing the relevant training for the internal staff which will be undertaking the task
  • This has led to a delay in commencing the 2026 programme, but it is projected that both the training and assessments will be completed in late July, with the 2026 Carriageway & Footway Herbicide Treatment commencing immediately thereafter
  • It should be noted that the application of herbicide is weather dependent, but once the operation commences the Service will have one dedicated team in each of the three locality areas which will undertake the task until completion.
