TThis Technical Note will be published on the Council’s website following circulation to Members. Its contents may be disclosed or shared outwith the Council.

  • This technical note is intended to provide an update to Elected Members and communities on the current status of Mugdock Castle within Mugdock Country Park
  • Following a report of falling masonry at Mugdock Castle, Mugdock Country Park, the East Dunbartonshire Council, Health & Safety Team attended to inspect the location from an employee and public safety perspective
  • The H&S inspection was carried out on 2 June within the Castle grounds and Tower
  • The H&S Officer identified a number of issues relating to the structure, the Castle and Tower that required remedial action and were considered unsafe and not suitable for public access. The officer recommended that substantial remedial work would be required to continue full access
  • The main issues noted were the following:
    • General area
      • Walls have loose stone/rock, particularly on the higher levels and lack of signage directing visitors not to climb on walls
    • Tower
      • Evidence of at least 1 live wasp hive within the Tower
      • Evidence of bats nesting in the lower elements of the Tower.
      • Lack of fire alarm system in the Tower
      • Insufficient lighting, although there is emergency lighting controlled by the solar panel system, the whole system is defunct and there is not adequate illumination in the rooms or stairwell areas.  The electrical system requires to be upgraded
      • The Solar panels are in a state of disrepair and requires to be removed
      • Additional railings on spiral stairwell required for safe public access/use
      • Additional safety signage inside Tower required for safe public access/use
  • Recommendations for action and further survey have been provided by the Health & Safety team to be progressed by staff at Mugdock Country Park
  • Regrettably, this means that the two annual Open Day weekend events (Doors Open Days, East Dunbartonshire) need to be postponed indefinitely until the remedial actions are completed. There is currently no timescale for the completion of the works.
