This Technical Note will be published on the Council’s website following circulation to Members. Its contents may be disclosed or shared out with the Council.
The purpose of this Technical Note is to update Elected Members on work associated with the Bishopbriggs Town Centre (BTC) Civic Space project that is part of the Council’s City Deal Programme.
On 18 December 2025 Council approved report EDC/055/25/DG and draft Full Business Case (FBC) for construction of the Civic Space located between the Triangle and St Matthews’ Church.
The designs for the space have been completed, and a tender process was undertaken in November 2025 to select the contractor to be appointed. The contractor appointment will be made following the approval of the FBC by the Glasgow City Region (the FBC is being considered by Glasgow City Region Chief Executives Group on 12 February).
The Council is due to lease the site on a long-term lease (175 years) from Morrisons. The lease is due to be entered into prior to construction, with construction currently programmed between March and December 2026.
Prior to construction there is a need to undertake some early de-vegetation of shrubs and some trees within the site to avoid impacting on nesting season. Officers have therefore agreed access to the site with Morrisons to allow the de-vegetation and tree removals to take place in advance of the nesting season and construction starting.
The majority of the shrub and tree removals will take place within the area currently fenced off, however shrubs and some of the trees that are adjacent to the footpath (along the A803) will be removed. Whilst the works are being undertaken, access along the footpath will be impacted.
It is worth noting that the designs for the Civic Space include the retention of a number of existing trees and a comprehensive new planting strategy to enhance the high-quality landscape to be provided throughout the Civic Space.
The proposed de-vegetation works are expected to be undertaken in two phases during February and will last around 2 days per phase.
The wider site remains the responsibility of Morrisons until the lease is concluded. Morrisons have indicated they intend to replace the site fencing during February.
