As part of this year’s International Women’s Day (IWD) celebrations, Provost Renwick attended an event in Auchinairn Community and Early Years Centre, jointly hosted by the Council and New College Lanarkshire.

The Women’s Brain Health workshop was an interactive session with practical advice, a virtual reality experience exploring how dementia can affect a person’s perception of reality and a discussion on the unique ways we can support women’s brain health.

Provost Renwick said, “This was a fascinating and informative event about a cruel disease which sadly affects many of our families. We know that one size does not fit all in healthcare and we are seeing an emerging agenda where women’s voices on issues like dementia are raising awareness of how we are affected by these conditions.

“A recent study showed women's brains losing grey matter during pregnancy then there’s brain fog during peri menopause, as well as the lifelong issues changing hormones have on women's brains which lead to them having dementia in greater numbers at a later age.

“I was pleased to attend, offer my support and learn as much as I could on this important topic, including lifestyle changes we can make to reduce the chances of developing dementia. I’m proud that the Council hosted this and other events around IWD as we build on our commitment to women’s issues and give local people an opportunity to get involved. My thanks to our friends and co-hosts from New College Lanarkshire.”
