If you are interested in local history then Milngavie Library has an exhibition running just now that is right up your street.
Today, Provost Renwick officially opened Milngavie Heritage Group’s latest offering, ‘A History of Bearsden’.
The exhibition was organised by Professor Malcolm Hill, Emeritus Professor Social Work, Strathclyde University, based on his book 'Bearsden - Sharks, Romans, Coffee Shops,' and supported by the Heritage Group. It runs until 7 November and visitors will be able to learn all about the town from its prehistory, including the Bearsden Shark, up to the end of WW2.
The exhibition covers the Roman period in detail, the Westerton Garden Suburb and Bearsden during both World Wars. It also explains the derivation of the names of New Kilpatrick and then Bearsden, the importance of the railways in developing the town and the use of some of its famous buildings like the magnificent Boclair House and Kilmardinny House.
Provost Renwick said, “Thanks to Professor Hill and the Heritage Group for this wonderful exhibition and for all they do to keep local history relevant and alive, giving young people an opportunity to learn about the origins of their communities.”
