Back

This year I have been trying to visit more local Primaries to talk to older pupils about my role, the job of the Council and about how local democracy impacts them.

I have loved these visits and meeting the children who have impressed me with their knowledge, surprised me with their competitiveness and given me a few laughs with their questions about my musical tastes, my dog Fergus and of course, my chain of office. It’s refreshing and energising to see the next generation in action and hear how they want to improve their communities by working with the Council.

I have also enjoyed celebrating your special occasions with you and learning more about the amazing work that goes on in our communities. There are so many fabulous organisations in East Dunbartonshire working for the greater good, and this year I joined the Citizens Advice Bureau as the team celebrated 30 years of hard work. I also helped the 268th Glasgow Boys’ Brigade mark their 90th anniversary and enjoyed the music of the Kirkintilloch Ladies Choir on their 65th birthday. Congratulations and thanks to them all.

Again this year, I asked you to tell me about our unsung heroes as I looked for 2025’s Community Champions. You didn’t disappoint. We had so many excellent entries and six worthy winners. Sadly, Seamus Harkin died very soon after receiving his award in recognition of his years of dedication to the Addiction and Recovery Centre in Kirkintilloch. He will be very sadly missed. I was also sorry to hear about the passing of Ivor McClure who was our Sustainability Champion in 2024. His work on environmental issues in the Lennoxtown area has left its mark for future generations.

This festive season has been as busy as ever and I’ve enjoyed the Christmas light switch-on events, our schools’ gala concert at the Royal Concert hall, the Kirkintilloch Male Voice Choir’s Christmas Concert and much more.  So much talent!

As we prepare to take a break and enjoy the festivities, I want to mention those who will keep working to provide vital services for the benefit of us all. My thanks to the emergency services, NHS, armed services, charities and of course, Council staff working around the clock.

Merry Christmas to them and to everyone in East Dunbartonshire. I hope you have a lovely time and send best wishes for a happy, healthy New Year!
