Local man Donnie Livingstone was awarded the Provost’s first ever Bravery Award at a special reception at the Council HQ today.

In January of this year, Donnie was walking his dog Cooper along the Forth & Clyde Canal in Kirkintilloch when he saw an older lady on the icy water through the ice. He reached out to her but the ice cracked and she sunk under the water, which is about 1.5m deep at that point.

Thinking quickly on his feet, Donnie tied Cooper’s lead around the lady’s wrist and he managed to pull her to the side. He was able to hold her above the water and phone the emergency services, undoubtedly saving her life.

Provost Renwick said, “What Donnie did was exceptionally kind and brave and I felt that his efforts to selflessly help someone in dire need should not go unnoticed. It was a privilege to meet him and Cooper and offer him my thanks by way of a commemorative quaich.”
