Mental Health and Wellbeing

Mental health and wellbeing is everyone’s business. There is a lot that we can do to look after our own mental health and wellbeing. By looking after ourselves physically, mentally and emotionally we can cope better with life’s ups and downs. Many things can affect our mental health some of which can be out with our control, but we can do things to improve our mental health and wellbeing including:

  • Talking about how we feel can help. Try talking to friends and family about any problems or worries you are facing
  • Try have some “me time” regularly to help relax e.g. read a book, do some baking, listen to music or a podcast, have a bath or go for a walk
  • What we eat and drink can have a big influence over how we feel. Try drinking more water and having some more fruit and vegetables each day
  • Regular physical activity is a proven way to keep mentally well. A brisk half hour walk every day is an easy starting point
  • Trying something new e.g. taking up a new hobby or a new job can improve how we feel
  • People sometimes use alcohol as a way of coping with difficulties in their life. However, alcohol can actually cause and increase anxiety and depression as well as causing problems with sleep
  • Deal with problems as and when they happen, even if tempting to ignore they will still be there.
