Employee News 2021, Issue 59 - Christmas Message from Chief Executive

As we approach the end of 2021 we are once again faced with the unprecedented challenges that the COVID-19 global pandemic brings and in particular, the concerning infection rates of the Omicron variant that have been escalating in recent weeks. I would like to extend my sincerest thanks and appreciation to each and every one of you for your efforts and commitment over the past year, which has remained as challenging as 2020.

Our vital frontline services have continued to be delivered and the most vulnerable in our communities have received the critical and essential services they need thanks to your efforts and your dedication to carrying out your roles. It is not just the frontline that ensures our services are delivered.  I do not underestimate the significance of our workforce that are continuing to work from home and from operational offices, both supporting the frontline and delivering services remotely.  There are different challenges for these roles and it is the efforts of all our staff that we recognise and are truly grateful for.

As the pandemic is once again escalating, you will have seen our recent communications seeking support to be able to continue to deliver our vital services. Employee News 52 at the start of this month invited those able to support homecare delivery as part of our winter mitigation plans to get in touch. And earlier today in Employee News 58, volunteers are being sought to support a range of vital services in the coming weeks. If you can help out in any way, do please get in touch, your contributions will be hugely welcomed and appreciated.

We will continue to provide you with the most up to date guidance that is available from Scottish Government and the NHS in the ever-changing COVID situation.  We will also continue to ensure that every mitigation is in place in our workplaces to keep us safe and well from the virus.

It would be remiss not to mention that our last Council meeting of 2021 took place last night.  The first item of business, following the recent and sudden sad passing of Provost Alan Brown, was to elect a new Provost for the Council. In a unanimous decision, former Depute Provost, Councillor Gary Pews was elected and in his first official role, Provost Pews chaired the meeting and once more reflected on the dedicated service and commitment of Provost Brown, re-emphasising our thoughts and condolences to his wife Catherine and sons Alistair and Andrew. In such difficult circumstances, we wish Provost Pews well in his new role.

For those of you able to take time off over Christmas and New Year, enjoy your well-earned breaks. For those continuing to deliver our essential services across the festive period, huge and heart-felt thanks once more for all that you do. I hope you and your loved ones stay safe and well and take care in the coming weeks.

Thank you

Gerry
