Lenzie Moss received an extensive makeover to its well-known boardwalk and path network. Starting in November 2022, the boardwalk was completely revamped to create a better experience for visitors.
The project was funded by East Dunbartonshire Council’s Cycling, Walking and Safer Routes allocation from Transport Scotland and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (STP) as part of a larger project.
The boardwalk, originally built in 2005, has been loved by visitors for many years. The brand new boardwalk has been designed to enable safer access to Lenzie Moss for people of all ages and different abilities.
The new design maintains the circular route and continues to protect local wildlife habitats. Wider pathways have been created to increase accessibility and which carefully align with the rural aesthetic of the Nature Reserve.
In order for the work to be completed, the boardwalk had to be closed. This allowed all improvements to be completed on both the boardwalk and the path network. This meant that the two sections of the existing paths, which cover approximately 1350m, could be upgraded.
The first section of paths starting from the entrance of Heather Drive and reaching all the way to Blackthorn Grove, has been renewed and refreshed. The second section of paths to undergo renovation runs from the entrance to Lenzie Railway Station car park across to the northern boundary of the railway line, along the Moss.
The Council's Chief Executive, Ann Davie, said, “Lenzie Moss is enjoyed by many visitors who come to appreciate the surroundings, and it is considered a local treasure.
“The Moss is home to an array of wildlife and the new path has been created with this in mind, protecting the animals in the area, and beneath the boardwalk itself. The new boardwalk follows the circular route around the area.
“The new boardwalk has provided easier and safer access to the nature reserve for people of all ages and abilities.. The Council is committed to the upkeep of Lenzie Moss so that many generations are able to enjoy the area.
“I would like to thank residents and visitors for their patience during the works. I am sure they will agree that the end result was definitely worth the wait.”
Paul Dudman, Chairperson of Friends of Lenzie Moss, said on completion of the upgrade, “Friends of Lenzie Moss are glad to see the new boardwalk now in place.
“We were consulted on the design and must say it looks fantastic. We are also happy to have improved paths, that while wider, have managed to maintain the rural feel appropriate to the Local Nature Reserve.
“We would like to thank the Council for managing to deliver this project in what must be challenging financial times.”
