Meet the winners of the Young Champion category at the Provost’s Community Champion Awards 2023.
Both Ruby Hannon and Sarah Aitken had done so much for their communities that it was impossible to choose between them!
Former Turnbull Academy pupil Ruby has volunteered at In Cahootz ,a charity that helps people with recovery addiction through projects and initiatives focusing on Arts and Theatre, since she was 12 years old. She spends each Friday leading and helping groups of between 15-30 people with singing, dancing and drama workshops. She also organises an annual show that the group write and perform themselves. Ruby loves being a part of In Cahootz that she’s deferred her entry to Glasgow University to study Community Development, to accept an offer of Young Arts Trainee with the charity.
Lenzie Academy pupil Sarah Aitken is a Young Leader at 12th Glasgow (1st Lenzie) Scout Troop Beaver Colony and an active member of Lenzie committee, Lenzie Allies Group and the school’s Equalities Committee. A keen rugby player until a diagnosis of juvenile arthritis meant she had to give up playing the sport, Sarah uses her experience to raise awareness of the condition and support other young people with challenges. She does this in many ways including as a Beaver Young Leader where she helps many of the young people in the Colony that have additional support needs. Similar to a mentor, Sarah spends time with the young people when they first come to Beavers and throughout the year, helping them build friendships and increasing their confidence. Sarah has recently been accepted as a leader in the new Woodland View holiday play scheme and has asked to volunteer at the new school throughout her Sixth year.
