Details:

1.The purpose of this technical note is to provide clarity to population projections cited in the Chief Social Work Officers Annual Report for 2020-2021 which was included within the Council Committee papers of the 23rd September, referenced CE/04/21 agenda item 12.

2.Under section four of the report, titled ‘Social Services Delivery Landscape’, there are two population projection graphs which refer to projection assessments made at two different points in time (two years apart).  The first graph is included because it breaks down the under 65 projections into children and young people, and potential working age adults. It covers the time period 2016 – 2041.

Projected % Population Change 2016 – 2041

graph

The second graph gives the most recent projection from the National Records of Scotland (NRS). However, it covers a different period of time 2018 – 2043 and in the two years between the two graphs the projection for older adults has shifted to include a projected decline in the 65 – 74 year age group.

3.The explanatory narrative within this section refers to the most up to date projection as displayed within the second graph. It is accepted that while the inclusion of the two graphs, which were both correct at their time of writing, and was aiming to serve two slightly different purposes does create confusion. The issue will be remedied within next year’s report by updating the total population chart to use the same time period as the over 65’s chart, to ensure consistency.
