Industrial Action in East Dunbartonshire Schools

Update to National Pay Bargaining – 25 September 2023

We are pleased to confirm that all school transport for our ASN S4, S5 and S6 pupils, and for our Primary and Secondary Schools, will operate as normal on Tuesday 26, Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 September.

Due to the holiday weekend, we have been unable to resume normal transport arrangements for Baldernock Primary School, however we have ensured alternative transport by deploying three East Dunbartonshire Council buses. Pupils will be picked up in the usual locations.

The ongoing negotiations between COSLA and Trade Unions GMB, Unison and Unite in respect to the Pay Award for 2023, led to a further updated pay award offer being made on Thursday 21 September.

In response to this offer both GMB and Unite have agreed to suspend the strike action planned for Tuesday 26, Wednesday 27 and Thursday 28 September. However, Unison has confirmed that its members will still be undertaking strike action on these three days.

After reviewing Unison membership numbers of those who are employed by the Council to provide services to the running and operation of Schools and Early Year Facilities (Schools Facilities Management – Catering, Cleaning and Janitorial, and Education Support – Early Years Workers, Support for Learning, School Admin) the Council can confirm arrangements for 26, 27 and 28 September.

The health and safety of our pupils and staff is our priority and therefore due to the inability to meet safe staff ratios please note the following

  • East Dunbartonshire Early Years Centres will be closed – with the exception of Auchinairn, Cleddens and Oakburn.
  • Our ASN school Woodland View will be closed to pupils with the exception of those in S4, S5 and S6. Pupils in these three years can attend school as normal.
  • All our Primary and Secondary Schools will open as normal.

Those in receipt of free school meals (excluding the universal provision for P1 – P5) will have already received three day’s payment in the usual way.

Finally, please note that as catering levels will be low, all Primary and Secondary pupils should bring in a packed lunch on these three day.
