Energy Bills Support Scheme Alternative Funding

Most households will receive a £400 discount on their energy bills through the Energy Bills Support Scheme (EBSS) and via their domestic electricity supplier.

However, there are a number of households who pay for their electricity in a different way and therefore do not have a direct relationship with their supplier.

These households can now receive support through the Energy Bills Support Scheme – Alternative Funding (EBSS-AF)

This funding is a one-off £400 non-repayable discount to eligible households who have not received the main EBSS payment to help with their energy bills between 1 October 2022 and 31 March 2023, but who are still facing increased energy costs.

No household that has already received the EBSS payment will qualify for the alternative funding.

This latest support is provided by the UK Government and delivered by local authorities and is now open to all eligible households until 31 May 2023.

Eligibility

Subject to meeting the eligibility criteria which includes providing sufficient proof of address, people who will be able to receive support under EBSS-AF include:

  • care home residents and others in care facilities/sheltered accommodation (wholly or partly self-funded)
  • park home residents, houseboats, and caravans
  • social and private tenants who pay for energy through a landlord on a commercial supply
  • homes on a heat network/private wire
  • off-grid homes
  • farmhouses used for domestic purposes
  • traveller households on authorised sites
  • households in temporary/supported accommodation

How to apply

Applications are made directly to the UK Government’s Department for Energy Security and Net Zero and not to the Council.

If you are eligible for EBSS-AF, you will need to fill out a short online form via GOV.UK or by calling the contact centre on 0808 175 3287.

After your application is received, it will be verified and if you are successful your details will be shared with the Council who will send the payment directly into your bank account in a single instalment.

The Council will aim to send the payment within 30 working days of receiving the application from the Department of Energy Security and Net Zero.
