Following the sad news of the death of His Royal Highness, The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, on Friday 9 April 2021, Provost Alan Brown has paid tribute:

“I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, today. As Civic Head of East Dunbartonshire I will be sending my sincere condolences from the people of East Dunbartonshire, to Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family. Generations of young people from East Dunbartonshire have benefited from the Duke of Edinburgh Awards Scheme over the years.

"Not only was he an inspirational and well respected representative of the Royal Family, he was also a husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather, and my thoughts are with all members of the Royal Family at this sad time.”

On behalf of the Lieutenancy of Dunbartonshire, The Lord-Lieutenant Mrs Jill Young MBE, said: “I would like to send my sincere and deepest condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and The Royal Family on the death of His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh. His visits to our County have been many and varied over the years and along with a lifetime of dedication and selfless devotion and service to the Crown and the Country he leaves a legacy which is widely respected and deeply appreciated.”

An online book of condolence has been opened on the British Monarchy website for tributes.  We are all reminded to express condolences in the safest way possible, to continue to follow all coronavirus guidance and not to gather at Royal Residences.

Members of the public are asked to consider making a donation to a charity of their choice, or one of the Duke of Edinburgh's Patronages in memory of His Royal Highness rather than leaving floral tributes.
