Pupils from Castlehill Primary in Bearsden have successfully completed the Council’s Junior Warden Scheme – a project designed to help children be responsible citizens and avoid antisocial behaviour.
Thirty-two P5/6 pupils recently took part in classroom lessons and external activities to learn about community safety and what it means to them, their families and their community.
As part of the Junior Warden Scheme fire officers from Milngavie Fire Station brought an appliance along to the school, discussed fire safety with the children and taught them the crucial skills needed to administer CPR.
Pupils also enjoyed talks from local Community Police Officers, an NHS Health Improvement Officer on tobacco and smoking as well as input from the Mugdock Ranger.
Councillor Jim Gibbons, Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, met the young people at a special event in the school to hear their experience of the scheme. He then presented them with certificates to recognise their hard work.
He said, “The young people who take part in the Junior Warden Scheme are given the opportunity to work with our partners in Police Scotland and Scottish Fire and Rescue Service which builds vital links and breaks down barriers.
“By understanding the impact of antisocial behaviour on their community, neighbours and friends we hope pupils will be encouraged to make good choices.
“As part of the experience pupils were taught how to perform CPR and execute the recovery position, they learned about the toxins and poisons that are present in cigarettes and also the effect smoking can have on their health. They were also taught and reminded about their responsibilities whilst being in the countryside and the damaging effect that litter can have on the environment.”
During the scheme, the pupils kept notebooks detailing what they learned. At the special event to celebrate their achievements two pupils were presented with £10 gift vouchers as their notebooks were judged to be the best.
