Pupils at Meadowburn Primary School in Bishopbriggs are bonding over their new-found love of chess, spending their lunchtime learning moves and strategies to build up their game skills.
Under the watchful eye of local chess enthusiast Tom Dibble and Depute Head Teachers Mrs Craig and Mr Glancy about 30 pupils from P2-P7 are honing their tactics and hoping to compete against other schools soon.
Councillor Mohrag Fischer, Convener of the Council’s Education Committee wished the children well for their move into competitions.
She said, “The enthusiasm of the young people at Meadowburn Primary is wonderful and it’s great to see them getting involved and learning so fast. Mr Dibble and the teachers are giving up their valuable free time to help the children and it is certainly paying off.”
It is believed that playing chess offers young people wide educational benefits and it is supported and promoted by Chess Scotland’s Educational Trust.
Depute Head Teacher, Carole Craig added, “The children have been learning chess now for a few months and we have five teams with three P3 pupils ready to compete this month. It has been a great addition to school life and has proved really popular across all the age ranges.
“Our thanks go to Mr Dibble who not only passes on his knowledge and skills but shares his love and passion for the game with great patience.”
