Project means getting active will be a walk in the park...

School pupils, walkers and cyclists will benefit from a new active travel project in Bishopbriggs.

Works are taking place at Meadowburn Park over the coming weeks to improve the path network.

The project includes the resurfacing and widening of existing paths, and a new link connecting east and west - along the northern edge of the open space.

It is hoped the improvement works will help local residents and school pupils attending Meadowburn Primary to move around the area more easily - either on foot or by bike/scooter.

The project - funded by Sustrans and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport (SPT) - will connect both playparks within Meadowburn, as well as providing a missing link through the park.

The paths will connect to the recently-constructed ramp and steps between Meadowburn and Teviot Avenue, and will provide a safe, off road/quiet link through the area to the Leisuredrome and Forth and Clyde Canal.

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said, "I am pleased to see this work taking place in Meadowburn Park - improving the local path network for residents of all ages.

"It ties in with the Council's ongoing efforts to encourage people to get out and about - with benefits for health, wellbeing and the environment. I hope as many people as possible will take the chance to enjoy the new paths when they are finished."

The work compliments the Council's Active Travel Strategy 2015-2020 and Open Space Strategy 2015-2020.

Construction works will take approximately three weeks, with landscaping beginning in the spring.

Meanwhile, people are being offered a free swim at the Leisuredrome - provided they cycle to the leisure centre.

It's part of a trial initiative bring run by the Council and East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust.

If you cycle to the Leisuredrome between now and Sunday 4 November then you are eligible for a free dip in the pool.

To claim your free swimming session just cycle to the Leisuredrome, take a selfie on your bike outside - at the newly-upgraded shelters - and then show it to EDLC colleagues inside.

The trial is being funded by the Smarter Choices, Smarter Places programme - aimed at encouraging active travel - and may be rolled out to other leisure centres if successful.
