It is Dementia Awareness Week from June 4 to 10 and this year’s theme is making sure that nobody suffers dementia alone.

Dementia is a group of symptoms, which affect the brain and cause gradual decline in cognitive function. In Scotland there are approximately 90,000 people living with dementia, and for each person living with dementia there is a further impact on their carers, family and friends.

In East Dunbartonshire there are currently 2314 people living with dementia. The East Dunbartonshire Dementia Network, an online resource, was established to provide information and signposting local support services for people affected by the condition.

Susan Manion, Chief Officer of the East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), said, “Dementia Awareness week is a dedicated annual event designed to improve understanding of the condition and dispel myths.

“By learning just a little bit more about dementia, people can make a big difference.  It is vital that those living with dementia feel recognised, valued and supported in their local communities.”

To emphasise the theme of the week, East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care have organised a series of events to spread understanding of dementia within local schools and care facilities.

Although there is no cure for dementia at present, early diagnosis can allow access to various supports which are available.

Each person will experience dementia in their own way and many people maintain their independence for many years.

In the middle to later stages you may need support with daily activities such as cooking and housework, or personal care such as washing and dressing. The rate at which dementia progresses varies from person to person.
