Walk this Way – Dog Mess Intervention

Date:

East Dunbartonshire Council has teamed up with Dogs Trust and Keep Britain Tidy to stage an intervention in Bishopbriggs to motivate dog walkers to pick up their dog mess in two popular dog walking areas.

Both Etive Park and Greenhill/Woodhill Park dog walking routes have been identified for the project in a bid to make the areas cleaner and more pleasant green spaces for everyone to enjoy.

The intervention kicked off this week with our Streetscene teams emptying bins and clearing up the paths and grass in the area.  Along the route, bins will be available every 1km to ensure that dog owners have somewhere to dispose of their dog’s mess.

Over the following four week period our Community Safety Team will regularly patrol the routes, counting the number of dog poos on pathways and feeding the information back to Dogs Trust and Keep Britain Beautiful who will evaluate the distance dog mess is left from bins and the number of dog poos left bagged or without bags.

At the end of the four weeks our Streetscene teams will go back out and clear the paths and grass of any mess left during the project.

Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, Councillor Billy Hendry, said, “Dog fouling is seen as one of the biggest nuisances blighting our pavements, public paths and parks in East Dunbartonshire and it is our aim that this intervention will see a significant reduction of dog mess in these popular dog walking routes in Bishopbriggs.

“Dogs Trust and Keep Britain Tidy ran similar projects in six other local authorities last year resulting in, on average, a 38% reduction in dog mess in target areas.  I hope that we see similar results in Bishopbriggs and would encourage dog walkers across East Dunbartonshire to be considerate and clear up after their pets.”

Residents will be informed of the results of the Walk this Way intervention which will be reported back to the Council in late September.
