Since 1998 the Befriending Service has helped numerous young people aged between 8-18 years across East Dunbartonshire but more are needed to help some of the area's most vulnerable children.

Volunteers are asked to spend four hours of their time every two weeks for at least one year. You will be provided with training, ongoing support and expenses will be paid.

Volunteers befriend young people on a one-to-one basis and go with them on outings in the community, for a bite to eat, to do sports, go to the cinema, or even just a walk and a chat once every few weeks. The aim is to increase the confidence and self-esteem of the young person and to be someone they can trust.

East Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care partnerships Chief Officer Susan Manion, said, "There are many young people who experience problems at home, at school or in their communities that make their lives difficult or stressful. As a befriender, you could help make a difference by encouraging, listening and supporting them.

"The people most suited to befriending are those who are interested in young people, are good listeners, are reliable and have four hours to commit every two weeks.  Childcare experience is not required. It's more about who you are than what you've done’.
