Vital to minimise disruption to new road

East Dunbartonshire Council is working closely with stakeholders to minimise disruption to Bishopbriggs Relief Road.

Phase 4 of the road is currently under construction and when complete will help to cut congestion, support new investment, improve air quality and encourage active travel.

However, there have been delays due to the site's location next to the main Edinburgh-Glasgow rail line, unanticipated issues related to diverting utilities and ongoing discussions with landowners.

Councillor Alan Moir, Convener of Development and Regeneration, has written to Network Rail Scotland, stressing the need to work closely with the Council to minimise further disruption.

The £6.5m project involves the creation of:

  • A two-lane 50mph road - stretching 600 metres between Wester Cleddens Roundabout and a new roundabout, with another 100 metres of road on the north side of the railway
  • A new bridge over the main Edinburgh-Glasgow railway line
  • Dedicated walking/cycling route and bridge
  • A new access road into Cadder Yard
  • Two Sustainable Urban Drainage ponds.

Phase 4 of Bishopbriggs Relief Road is due to open in the autumn.

The existing stretch of Westerhill Road and bridge will then be used as an active travel corridor - Wester Way - becoming a haven for walkers and cyclists.

Councillor Moir, who is also the Council's representative on Strathclyde Partnership for Transport, said, "The new phase of Bishopbriggs Relief Road will be a huge boost for the area and I'm looking forward to work being completed.

"Previously-unknown issues can arise when construction begins on such large infrastructure projects, but it has been frustrating for local residents and workers.

"I have written to Network Rail Scotland seeking assurances that it will work productively with us to keep any further delays to a minimum.

"In the meantime, I would like to pay tribute to the people and businesses of Bishopbriggs for their patience.

"Rest assured, officers are continuing to work closely with stakeholders to minimise disruption and inconvenience.

"When complete, the new stretch of road will help to cut congestion, support new investment, improve air quality and encourage active travel.

"The existing Westerhill Road and bridge will become an active travel corridor for pedestrians and cyclists - linking north and south Bishopbriggs."

The project is part of the Council's 10-year capital programme and is being part-funded through developers' contributions from the Bishopbriggs East housing development.

  • Phases one and two of the relief road - which are largely within the Glasgow boundary - are complete and connect drivers to the Robroyston roundabout and onto the M80.
  • Phase three was wholly funded by developers’ contributions and delivered by Taylor Wimpey as part of the planning obligations associated with its Bishopbriggs East housing development. It opened in summer 2014.
