Universal Credit roll-out in East Dunbartonshire

Thursday, 10 December, 2015

Universal Credit, a new benefit administered by the Department for Work and Pensions, is being rolled out in East Dunbartonshire in December.

The new benefit is for people of working age who are out of work or are in work and receiving a low income.

Not everyone will be put on Universal Credit at the same time. First to receive it will be working-aged single people who approach the Job Centre as new claimants and who would otherwise have been eligible for Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Claims will be made on-line and payments will normally be made monthly to one person in the household, directly in to a bank or building society account.

Council Leader Rhondda Geekie explained, “As with all aspects of Welfare Reform introduced in recent years, we continue to work with local partners, including Citizens’ Advice Bureau and local Registered Social Landlords.

“It will only be very small numbers of residents who will meet the qualifying criteria when Universal Credit is rolled out in East Dunbartonshire on December 14. The Job Centre will inform customers as to whether they fall within the criteria."

For more information about Universal Credit and how you might be affected, contact your local Jobcentre office. Kirkintilloch Jobcentre Plus can be contacted on 0345 604 3719.
