The Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival is on from 3-26 May and the official line-up includes a host of local events, organised by East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust:

  • Learn With Your Library: Come & Connect Workshop

Find out how to keep in touch with friends and family through technology in a relaxed, small group environment. This free workshop takes place in Bearsden Library (3, 6, 13, 20 & 27 May, 10am–noon), Westerton Library (17 May, 10am–noon) and Bishopbriggs Library (22 May, 2–3.30pm).

  • Drop-In Spinning Workshop

There will be a hands-on opportunity to explore Kirkintilloch's textile history on Saturday 4 May. The free drop-in session will cover drop spinning, with the chance to try this traditional craft. You may even discover what a ‘niddy-noddy’ is! The workshop takes place in Kirkintilloch Town Hall (11am-3pm).

  • Textiles For Beginners: Colour Theory Workshop

The workshop - which includes step-by-step tuition on textile colour theory, and how colour can affect mood and personal outlook in a relaxed teaching environment - takes place at Bishopbriggs Library on 13 and 20 May (6-7.45pm). Tickets cost £16 - please book in advance.

  • Relaxing Reads

Turn over a new leaf and enjoying a relaxing reading session in Bearsden Library. Pick up a book or just listen to a selection of short readings to raise your mood. This free event takes place on Tuesday 14 May (11am–noon).

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said, "I am pleased we have been able to organise a number of events which tie in with the Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival and also the forthcoming Bearsden Festival.

"Both will highlight the positive impact that arts can have on mental health. It is important we continue to raise awareness of the issues faced by so many people and the support available from a range of organisations, as well as the positive effect that arts and leisure can have on wellbeing."

Sandy Marshall, Chair of EDLC Trust, added, "I hope as many people as possible enjoy the events taking place locally as part of both festivals.

"We are delighted to work with the Council to provide an array of culture and leisure events, facilities and attractions all year round. Check out www.edlc.co.uk to book and find out more about what is taking place locally."

The Scottish Mental Health Arts Festival takes place from 3-26 May and this year's theme is 'Connected'. It is led by the Mental Health Foundation, in association with partners such as EDLC. Visit www.mhfestival.com for more details of local and national events.

Meanwhile, Bearsden Festival takes place from 10-19 May and includes performances, workshops, talks and more - involving a range of organisations and people of all ages.

This year the community festival is exploring mental health and wellbeing through creativity and the arts. Visit www.eastdunbarton.gov.uk/news/bearsden-festival-line-announced for more information.
