Support local town centres this Christmas

People are being urged to support their local town centres in the run-up to Christmas and beyond.

Efforts continue in East Dunbartonshire to ensure Bearsden, Bishopbriggs, Kirkintilloch and Milngavie town centres not only survive, but thrive.

People who live and work in the towns have been urged to use local shops, businesses and hostelries as much as possible.

The call comes during Scotland’s Towns Week - organised by Scotland’s Towns Partnership.

Christmas lights will soon be switched on in all four town centres.

This year's Christmas lights switch-on events are being led by the community, with support from the Council as regards supply of the festive lights, power supply, officer time and trees where appropriate.

Meanwhile, the Council is developing strategies for Bearsden, Bishopbriggs and Milngavie town centres and people are being urged to get involved.

An online survey is live until Wednesday 30 November and workshops are taking place in:

  • Bishopbriggs – Wednesday 16 November at Bishopbriggs Memorial Hall, 6.30pm-8.15pm

  • Milngavie – Thursday 17 November at the Fraser Centre (Milngavie Precinct), 6.30pm-8.15pm.

The Bearsden workshop took place on Tuesday 8 November.

A series of improvement works already underway in Kirkintilloch as part of its Masterplan.

Councillor Rhondda Geekie, Leader of the Council, said, "I would invite everyone who lives or works in East Dunbartonshire's town centres - and indeed everyone who visits - to use local shops and businesses as much as they can.

"There are some wonderful retailers and hostelries, with many special offers in the run-up to Christmas.

"Looking beyond the festive period we want to do all we can to ensure the continued vitality of our town centres, which is why it's so important for people to give their views on Bearsden, Bishopbriggs and Milngavie town centres.

"I would urge everyone with an interest in their towns to have a say via the online consultation or at workshop events."

Visit the webpage and survey to get involved. The closing date for the survey is Wednesday 30 November.

If you would like to get involved in either the Bishopbriggs or Milngavie town centre workshops please send an e-mail to development.plan@eastdunbarton.gov.uk to book a place.

The events use the 'Place Standard' tool to explore the current strengths, weaknesses and main requirements of each centre.
