Statutory Council Meeting to confirm key Council Positions following 4 May elections

At its Statutory Meeting last night (Tuesday 23 May), following the observation of a minute’s silence in memory of the victims of the terrible events in Manchester on Monday, East Dunbartonshire Council elected Councillor Alan Brown as Provost and Councillor Gary Pews as Depute Provost following a voting process.

Voting in the Council Chamber also confirmed Councillor Gordan Low as Leader and Councillor Gillian Renwick as Depute Leader of the Council.

Council then considered a report for the adoption of Administrative Scheme/Standing Orders for East Dunbartonshire Council.  Standing Orders were adopted with an agreement to further consider the Administrative Scheme at a Special Council Meeting to be held on 13 June.

Appointments were then made to the Council’s Service Committees, Planning Board, Sub-Committees, Quasi-Judicial Boards and External Bodies.  The Service Committee and Planning Board appointments were as follows:

Following the meeting Council Leader Councillor Low said, "We recognise the responsibility of our role as the administration of East Dunbartonshire Council. Whilst I do not underestimate the challenges the Council faces it is our clear intention to take a constructive approach in developing and delivering the very best services for the residents of East Dunbartonshire.”

Provost Brown said, "It is a privilege to be elected as Provost for East Dunbartonshire and I am honoured to take up this role.  I will endeavour to carry out the duties of Provost to the very best of my ability.  I will do my utmost to ensure that our Council meetings are run fairly and well and I trust that we will all respect each other and the proceedings at meetings in the Council Chambers."

”Sadly, the first role of the Provost, confirmed to Council, will be to write to the Lord Mayor of Manchester on behalf of East Dunbartonshire Council to express condolences and offer support following Monday’s terrible incident.
