East Dunbartonshire took silver position in the Scottish Final of the Young Consumers of the Year competition held at the Scottish Parliament last month.

Pupils from Douglas Academy were representing East Dunbartonshire for the second consecutive year and the four-strong team of savvy S5/6 pupils performed well against stiff opposition from across Scotland.

The switched-on foursome reached the final by beating Kirkintilloch High and St Ninian’s High in the local heat, run by the Council’s Trading Standards Team late last year.

For the first time, the Young Consumer competition was co-ordinated nationally by East Dunbartonshire’s Trading Standards Team.

Thomas Glen the Council’s Depute Chief Executive – Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets, said, “Well done to the pupils from Douglas Academy who worked very hard to reach the final and secure second position against strong opposition. The knowledge displayed by all the pupils who took part was outstanding.

“I’d also like to thank the Trading Standards Team who, together with school staff, worked with pupils to teach them the syllabus and prepare them for the final. They helped them understand their rights and responsibilities and learn important life skills to become effective consumers.”

Local Citizens Advice Bureau volunteers also attended and cheered on the East Dunbartonshire contingent.

Quiz topics included money & finance, food, health & wellbeing, safety & the environment and consumer affairs.
