Ready to raise the flag for Festival 2018

Families are being invited to get creative and get active at a range of events in East Dunbartonshire.

A new era in sport gets underway this summer as Glasgow co-hosts the inaugural European Championships – an exciting new event bringing together some of the continent’s leading sports, including aquatics, cycling, gymnastics, golf, rowing and triathlon.

Festival 2018 is the cultural programme, with a range of inspiring events taking place locally.

Applications were invited earlier this year for the Festival 2018 Our Place Fund – with a total of £15,000 available in East Dunbartonshire.

Successful events – chosen after voting took place online – will be held throughout East Dunbartonshire. See below for a run-down of local events.

Meanwhile, East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust has organised a Race Day Rally at Bishopbriggs Library & Community Hub on Wednesday 8 August – the same day as the Glasgow 2018 Cycling Time Trial, which will see Europe’s elite cyclists travelling through East Dunbartonshire.

The event includes:

  • Drop-in Workshops

Flag making for all the family – help cheer on the super-fast cyclists (10-11am, 12.30-1.30pm and 2.30-3.30pm)

  • Musical Performances
  • Fèis PhàisligCeilidh Trail – a project showcasing talented young musicians and singers aged 16-25. Look out for them busking around the library at around 10.30am.
  • Soundcycle Project – children’s musical workshop which combines Samba with cycling – noon-1.30pm
  • Street Theatre Performances

Inner City Twitching involves walkabout performers dressed as 'Bird Watchers' – a new urban sport! Interactive fun for all the family. Times – noon, 2pm and 4pm.

The Council has organised a Cycling and Walking Family Fun Day on Wednesday 8 August – noon-4pm – at Woodmill Park, Torrance.

Attractions will include:

  • Geo-caching
  • Toddlers’ Toddle
  • Walking football
  • Water Zorbs
  • Giant inflatables
  • Bike stunt team
  • Dr Bike and Professor Balance
  • Face painter.

Please be aware that due to road closures you will only be able to walk or cycle to this event.

Joint East Dunbartonshire Council Leader, Councillor Andrew Polson, said, "Glasgow 2018 will be a fantastic celebration of sport and I hope as many people as possible in East Dunbartonshire can get involved – whether as spectators or enjoying community events as part of Festival 2018.”

Joint Council Leader, Councillor Vaughan Moody, said, "There’s a terrific range of events taking place – organised by the Council, EDLC and community groups across the area. The Cycling and Walking Family Fun Day will be a particular highlight, giving residents an opportunity to get involved and get active as part of Glasgow 2018.”

Glasgow 2018 Championships Director, Colin Hartley, said, “It’s brilliant to see so many exciting events set to take place in East Dunbartonshire as part of Festival 2018.

“The Glasgow 2018 European Championships is the moment our people will proudly welcome Europe. With 52 nations taking part in 12 sports, Glasgow 2018 will be a must-watch, must-attend summer of sport and culture with athletes. Our fantastic home crowd and our many visitors, alongside the cultural and sporting action, will create magical moments and showcase what Scotland has to offer. It’s not to be missed!”

* For details of road closures and restrictions on 8 August 2018 as a result of the Cycling Time Trial, visit  Get Ready Glasgow.  Awareness events have been held with residents and businesses, and letters have been issued to affected properties.

* Berlin is hosting athletics events as part of the European Championships. 

Events taking place locally with Festival 2018 funding:

  • Thursday 19 July – Bach Flower Workshop at Kirkintilloch Baptist Church (10am-noon). Organised by Scottish Families Affected By Alcohol & Drugs (SFAD). There will also be an evening workshop on 26 July at 6.30pm.
  • Monday 23 and Tuesday 24 July – Film Making Workshop at Kirkintilloch Town Hall (10am-4pm) Creative groups are invited to shoot short films over a 48-hour period, followed by a screening of finished films in Kirkintilloch Town Hall on 27 July (1-3pm). Organised by GRACE.
  • Monday 23 July through to Friday 27 July – Art Attack Week. Local artist Carol Moore will be teaching children different art techniques and visiting Kelvingrove Art Gallery with Killermont Out of School Care. To book, contact the club at  killermont@stepbystepnursery.co.uk
  • Taiko Drumming workshops will be taking place at Deafblind Scotland Learning and Development Centre in Kirkintilloch from 16-26 July. There will be a performance and audience-participation event on Thursday 26 July (11.30am-noon).
  • Saturday 28 July – Official Tenth Anniversary drop-in event celebrating Milngavie in Bloom – from noon at the Fraser Centre, Milngavie. Organised by Milngavie in Bloom.
  • Saturday 28 July – Pop Up Playscapes at Bishopbriggs Library (10am-4pm). Organised by City of Play.
  • Thursday 2 August – Mind That Song – Summer Extravaganzas, in partnership with Nevis Ensemble, at the Tickled Trout near Bearsden (10am-noon). Event is inclusive of people living in the community with dementia, families, friends and carers, and residents of care homes within East Dunbartonshire. Organised by Alzheimer Scotland.
  • Saturday 4 August – Music in Mind at Kirkintilloch Town Hall (noon-2.30pm) – celebrating music, mindfulness and bringing the community together. Organised by Creative Spark Theatre Arts.
  • Wednesday 8 August – Family Fun Day at Hillhead Community Centre from 10am-2pm. Open to all families within the local community. Craft activities will include jewellery making, tile painting, sewing, printing and a sensory messy area for babies. Organised by S.T.A.R. for Families.
  • Thursday 9 August – Storytelling in the Park at King George V Park in Bearsden (10.30–11.30am). Event will be held in Killermont Parish Church in the event of bad weather. Organised by Killermont Park Development Group.
  • Friday 10 August – Pipe Band Concert at Campsie Memorial Hall, Lennoxtown (7.15-8.15pm). Organised by 1st Campsie BB.
  • Saturday 11 August – Food and Music Event at Twechar Healthy Living and Enterprise Centre (noon-3pm). Open to everyone within the community, offering food from a range of different cultures. Organised by Twechar Community Action.
  • Saturday 11 August – Mind That Song – Summer Extravaganzas, in partnership with Nevis Ensemble, at St Mary’s Parish Church, Kirkintilloch (7pm-9pm). Event is inclusive of people living in the community with dementia, families, friends and carers, and residents of care homes within East Dunbartonshire. Organised by Alzheimer Scotland.
  • Saturday 11 August – Waterside Village Festival at Waterside Football Park (noon-5pm) offering traditional gala day fun, including games, dancing displays, pipe band and parade. Organised by Waterside Community Council.
  • Saturday 11 August – Family Art Day hosted by Campsie Art Vibe at Campsie Memorial Hall (1.30-4.30pm). Chance to have a go, meet local artists, sample home baking and enjoy storytelling with Beatrice Ajayi, artist and writer. Organised by Milton of Campsie Art Club.   • Saturday 11 August – swimming gala at Bishopbriggs Leisuredrome
  • Sunday 12 August – EDC Festival Fund Concert at Mugdock Country Park Bandstand (noon-2pm), with a light concert programme of well-known music. Organised by Dunbartonshire Concert Band.
  • Sunday 12 August – Family Sports Day and BBQ at Hillhead Community Centre (noon-4.30pm). Organised by Little Monster Mash Up.
  • Sunday 12 August – Creative Spaces Pop-Up Studio at Milton of Campsie Village Hall (11am-4.30pm). There will be a range of original artwork on sale and artists can also be seen working using various techniques and mediums. Bring your own materials and join Milton of Campsie Art Club at work. Organised by the Art Club.
  • Sunday 12 August – Kirkintilloch & Kilsyth ASC Synchro Showcase and 'Come & Try' session at Kilsyth Swimming Pool (4-6pm)
  • Wednesday 15 August – Song and Dance Show at Auchinairn Community and Early Years Centre (11am). Organised by Auchinairn Parents and Toddler Group.
