Over the past two decades the 12 strong group, who have been meeting monthly in Kirkintilloch's William Patrick Library since January 1999, have read more than 240 books and have enjoyed reading and discussing a wide range of different novels, non-fiction and poetry while developing great friendships.

The group - the first library reading group set up in East Dunbartonshire Libraries - has seen lots of different members over the years but several of the original members still play an active role.

Sandy Marshall, Chair of EDLC Trust, said, "I'd like to congratulate William Patrick Library reading group on reaching such a landmark anniversary and I hope it continues to go from strength-to-strength for the next 20 years and beyond.

"This group was at the forefront of the growth of reading groups in this area and inspired others to start their own. Now, East Dunbartonshire Libraries supports reading groups in William Patrick, Bishopbriggs, Bearsden, Milngavie and Lennoxtown libraries as well as many community-based reading groups which meet in other venues."

Councillor Billy Hendry, Convener of the Place, Neighbourhood & Corporate Assets Committee, added, "Reading for pleasure can have so many benefits on the lives of people of all ages and joining a reading group is a great way to discover the joy of reading while forging new friendships.

"If you're a member of a book group, or fancy joining one, head down to your local library and find out how the library can support you. They can help with finding you somewhere to meet, recommend books to enjoy and have a collection of Reading Groups sets which are available to local reading groups to borrow."
