Pupils sign up to use pedal power!

Energetic young cyclists have saddled up for a new term on two wheels as a Kirkintilloch secondary school continues to blaze a trail.

St Ninian's Cycling Club recently organised a healthy lunch - funded by Sustrans Scotland - to encourage pupils to sign up for 2017/18.

Around 40 youngsters are ready to use pedal power - an increase of more than 200% on last year.

The club is being driven by English teacher Kate McKinstry and colleagues across the school, who recently gained Velotech certification so they can now deliver a National SQA qualification in bike maintenance.

The lunchtime club began last year, with a dozen pupils enjoying cycle rides and related activities.

This year, with the increased membership, there will be three groupings:

  • Bike maintenance
  • Digimapping (plotting cycle routes for trips)
  • Weekly cycle runs.

Earlier this year, St Ninian's High was awarded Cycle Friendly Secondary School status with distinction for three years.

The school has been working closely with Sustrans Scotland, which used Transport Scotland funding to provide St Ninian's with 32 mountain bikes in 2015.

Headteacher Paul McLaughlin said, "Well done to Kate and everyone involved in the St Ninian's Cycling Club for their inspirational efforts to encourage pupils to get active and learn new skills - including online route planning and cycle maintenance.

"The lunchtime cycling club is run by teachers across the school and is a great example of teamwork in and out of the classroom. The club even has its own Twitter account - @snhs_cycling - to keep people informed of local and national events."

Councillor Mohrag Fischer, Convener of Education, said, "I'm glad to hear that the club is going from strength to strength.

"As well as helping to improve health and wellbeing, the club also allows senior pupils to develop their leadership skills and contribute to the school community.

"Well done to everyone involved for their hard work. As an authority we are committed to supporting our youngsters to use active travel - particularly to and from school."
